Thanksgiving is one of my favorite days of the year, and after hosting for four years now (and cooking for a lot of people), I’ve learned that the secret to actually enjoying the day is all in the preparation. A smooth Thanksgiving doesn’t just magically happen—it’s built step-by-step in the days leading up to it. Here are the simple habits and routines that help me host confidently, keep my kitchen calm, and make the whole day feel fun instead of chaotic.
Set Out All Your Serveware the Day Before
This is my number one tip. The day before Thanksgiving, I go through every dish I’m making and pull out the exact bowl, platter, or baking dish it will go in. I label everything with sticky notes so I’m not scrambling when the turkey is done and ten side dishes need a home. It sounds small, but it makes Thanksgiving Day so much easier.
Do All Your Baking Ahead of Time
Anything that can be baked the day before—pies, rolls, desserts—gets done early. Your house smells incredible, your oven is freed up for the big day, and you can cross an entire category of cooking off your list.
Clean the House the Day Before
A clean house just makes everything feel calmer. I do a top-to-bottom tidy the day before so that on Thanksgiving morning I’m not frantically vacuuming while checking the turkey.
Brine the Turkey Two Days Before
This is a ritual at this point: two days before Thanksgiving, my turkey goes into its brine. It gives it enough time to soak, absorb flavor, and stay juicy, and it means one major task is already handled by the time the real cooking begins.
Make the Cranberry Sauce the Day Before
Cranberry sauce is the easiest thing to get out of the way early. I make mine the day before, let it chill, and it’s always better the next day anyway.
Use the Same Menu Every Year
Some people love to experiment, but I’ve learned that keeping the same menu every year is the ultimate stress-reliever. I already know what works, I know the timing, and I don’t feel pressure to reinvent anything. It makes hosting feel like a comfortable tradition instead of a project.
Print Out All Your Recipes
Even though I know my menu by heart, I still print out every recipe. Having them laid out on the counter keeps me organized and on track, especially when the kitchen gets busy.
